Biography
Dr. de Guzman is an Assistant Professor in Adolescent Development in the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies and Extension Specialist in the Agricultural and Research Division and Extension Office at UNL. Dr. de Guzman's primary program of research examines two complimentary lines of inquiry, the roles of socio-cultural and ecological contexts in human development, and the factors that promote positive and prosocial development in youth. She is very much interested in understanding the mechanisms by which culture or ethnicity impact prosocial outcomes, with a focus on how culture or ethnicity is manifested (e.g., through the configuration of social networks, the activities and contexts available to youth, etc.). In examining these issues, she has conducted studies in the Philippines, U.S. and Brazil . She has also worked collaboratively with researchers to examine similar issues among youth from Turkey and Kenya. Her work examines these same issues among Latinos in the U.S.
On-going projects include examinations of the everyday conceptions of morality among Brazilian adolescents, the role of social companions of Philippine and U.S. children in the performance of their prosocial behaviors in naturalistic settings, and the correlates of prosocial behaviors among Brazilian, Filipino, and Turkish college students. Additionally, she is involved in the evaluation of an intergenerational project with the use of technology at Bryan Community School in Lincoln, Nebraska. She is currently working on a 5-year research plan to examine the social support networks of Latino and Caucasian youth in Nebraska, and the role this plays in predicting prosocial outcomes (directed and moderated by the development of competencies). Dr. de Guzman's primary research interests are in social and ecological predictors of prosocial outcomes, the role of culture/ethnicity in development, and extension programs that promote positive outcomes among adolescents or provide buffering effects from risk.
