Biography

Dr. Joan Erickson is an Associate Professor specializing in literacy development and instruction, the use of technology to support literacy activities, and instructional programming for individuals with special needs. She teaches courses in the areas of literacy instruction, diagnosis and correction of reading difficulties, instructional strategies, secondary special education, and the reading and writing development of individuals with diverse learning needs, and middle-level literacy instruction. She also conducts workshops addressing issues of social justice, equity and community building in respect to education, and human service organizations.

Dr. Erickson is actively involved in the public schools in activities such as the Reading Recovery Program. She was co-recipient of the International Reading Association's 1996 Albert J. Harris Award which recognizes outstanding contributions in the area of learners experiencing reading or writing problems. She currently serves on the review boards of the Journal of Educational Psychology and Educational Psychology Review. She has numerous national and state presentations, including presentations at the American Educational Research Association and the National Reading Conference.
