Biography

Dan Hoyt is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Bureau of Sociological Research. He is on the faculty advisory board for the Gallup Research Center and serves on the Curriculum Committee for the Survey Research and Methodology program. He was previously on the Sociology faculty at Iowa State University from 1980 through 2001 and served as the Director of Survey Research at the Institute for Social and Behavioral Research. He received his PhD degree in Sociology from the UNL. Dr. Hoyt's primary scholarly interest is on mental health and substance use among high-risk adolescents. He is currently co-investigator on NIH funded grants examining these issues among homeless and runaway youth and American Indian children. Dr. Hoyt is also interested in general methodological issues including approaches to gathering data on sensitive topics and how to conduct research with populations that are difficult to sample and/or access. Dr. Hoyt has served on grant review committees for the National Institute for Mental Health, the National Cancer Institute, and the National Institute of Drug Abuse. He teaches graduate courses in Survey Methodology, Advanced Statistical Modeling, and the Sociology of Mental Health.
