Biography

Dr. Richard Levy is the Staff Scientist for the ANDRILL Program based out of the ANDRILL Science Management Office at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. ANDRILL is an international scientific drilling program with the aim to recover stratigraphic records of variation in the extent and influence of the ice sheet around the Antarctic margin by deep drilling from floating ice platforms (http://andrill-server.un.edu). Dr. Levy's primary role is to support the development and implementation of ANDRILL's scientific program.

Research interests center on evolution of the Antarctic continent with a focus on Cenozoic climate and ice-sheet history. Dr. Levy also has a keen interest in geoscience education, having spent several years studying educational theory and practicing in the K-12 environment. He is particularly interested in developing geoscience education models that focus on constructivist philosophy and foster student inquiry. A current collaborative project with colleagues from the Department of Geosciences and College of Education and Human Sciences involves development and implementation of an integrated field-based geoscience and pedagogical methods course for pre-service teachers, which incorporates a 3-week excursion around Wyoming and Nebraska. The primary goal of this effort is to develop an optimal model by which pre-service educators feel empowered, capable, and prepared to create effective and engaging geoscience courses for their future students.
