Biography
Ian Newman began his teaching career as an instructor of cultural anthropology. He had an academic appointment at the University of Tennessee and did a post-doctoral program at the Harvard School of Public Health. He then joined the staff of the World Health Organization's South East Asia Regional Office in New Delhi, India as a health education specialist. In 1974 he joined the faculty of the University of Nebraska Medical Center and later moved to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus.
Dr. Newman has presented short courses and been the featured conference speaker in China, Thailand, England, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, France, Sweden, Norway, Finland, The Philippines, Taiwan, Canada, Slovakia, and Austria. For the past 10 years he has been actively involved in teaching and research projects in China and Thailand. Current interests include human behavior that effects health. This includes the school link: health problems that interfere with learning and school attendance, development and evaluation of school-based programs that are designed to reduce behaviors that compromise health, issues of adolescent health, developing instruments to measure outcome expectancies, self-efficacy, and other factors that predict and influence behaviors related to health.
