Biography

Dr. Dixie Sanger received her MA in Speech-Language Pathology from California State University at Long Beach. After continuing to work a number of years in both clinical and school settings, she earned a PhD in 1981 from UNL. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders at the University.

Current research interests include addressing assessment and intervention issues of children and adolescents with language disorders, serving students with communication disorders involved in violence, and addressing intervention issues of children with language-based literacy problems. Dr. Sanger and her colleagues have published work on the role of speech-language pathologists in serving students with communication disorders involved in violence. Additionally, they have used mixed designs to understand female delinquents' views about their own language and communication behaviors as well as their experiences about learning in school. Recently, they were awarded a grant in the amount of $800,000 for Preparation of Personnel to Serve Children with High-Incidence Disabilities, Project Support: Speech-Language Pathologists Supporting Literacy Instruction. Prior to this they were funded on a similar grant to train graduate students majoring in communication disorders to better serve students with language-based literacy problems.
