Biography

Rosalie Torres Stone is currently an Assistant Professor in Sociology at UNL. She received her PhD in 2000 in Sociology from the University of Connecticut-Storrs. Dr. Rosalie Torres Stone's main scholarly interest is social inequality and substance use, specifically among the Latino population. For the last year and half she has been working on a research project funded by the Tobacco Settlement Funds examining aspects of Latino culture among adolescents in two rural Nebraska communities. In collaboration with the local school systems, she focuses on groups of first and second generation youth on the topic of Latino culture. The focus groups identified risk and protective factors specific to rural Latino youth in meatpacking communities.

She is currently extending this project for a COBRE grant. The objective of her proposal is to better understand the factors that influence the risk and protective factors for early onset alcohol use for first, second and third generation rural Latino adolescents. The research will be guided by a general theoretical model that specifically addresses the unique influences of culturally-specific risk and protective factors for these youth and will examine the interplay of acculturation and acculturative stress in predicting alcohol use. The rationale for this project is that the information gained will provide a solid foundation for how culturally-informed prevention and treatment programs may have to be designed to effectively address risk and protective factors on substance use for Latino immigrant adolescents. The long term goal is to identify the factors that influence the progression to regular use of alcohol for rural Latino immigrants and U.S. citizens, in order that effective social and educational intervention strategies can be developed to reduce the magnitude of this problem. Dr. Torres Stone teaches undergraduate courses in Marriage and Family, Family Diversity and Social Inequality. Her graduate course is Social Stratification.
