School Psychology Leadership Specialization in Family-Centered Interdisciplinary Collaboration

The University of Nebraska School Psychology program offers a specialty track in Family-Centered Interdisciplinary Collaboration, funded by the U.S. Department of Education through the year 2008. The Family-Centered Interdisciplinary Collaboration project represents a partnership between the School Psychology program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Munroe-Meyer Institute at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Through the project, school psychology graduate students are trained as leaders in interdisciplinary collaboration across medical, educational, and family systems. The project merges two empirically supported models (conjoint behavioral consultation and interdisciplinary leadership) as a means to support students with disabilities, their families, and their teachers.

Through involvement in the project, graduate students acquire competencies related to knowledge, skills, and leadership. Specifically, participants will demonstrate (a) knowledge of medical/educational issues, roles of multiple service providers, systems supporting children with disabilities, and intervention options; (b) skills in interdisciplinary consultation and collaboration, culturally sensitive, family-centered services, and intervention design and evaluation; and (c) leadership related to research design, implementation, dissemination, systemic change, and capacity building.

Students in training receive extensive didactic and applied experiences under close supervision. Six training assistantships are available each year for doctoral students in school psychology. The assistantships are organized into three cohorts, designed to provide training to incoming, intermediate, and advanced students.
