Academic Interventions, Learning and Literacy

The Academic Interventions, Learning and Literacy Research theme is focused on developing and investigating evidence-based programs and interventions for academic learning and performance, and the complex processes surrounding teaching and learning. Multiple approaches are represented including traditional, qualitative, and mixed-methods. Research foci include reading, spelling and math interventions. Early literacy and numeracy, parent and family involvement, responsiveness to academic interventions, and effective intervention models are investigated.  Accountability in education, use of assessment data to plan interventions, and scaling up interventions to address broad-based educational needs are also included.

In addition to research on child learning, this thematic area is concerned with effective teaching, professional development activities, and the promotion of effective learning environments. Conceptions of knowing and learning are advanced from multiple frameworks. Thus, projects in this area include emphases on both student learning and academic performance, as well as teacher skill development, professional enhancement, and ecological interventions to aide instruction and learning.
